Ravel and the Quiet Register
The doctoral project: three years spent on the problem of playing Ravel softly, and what it asks of an instrument.
The doctorate asked a narrow question: what has to happen, physically, for Ravel to sound as quiet on a modern concert grand as the score implies.
The answer turned out to have as much to do with the instrument and the room as with the player. Three recitals were given as part of the submission.
